Commission on Rites and Sacraments: Overview and Invitation to Participate

We are pleased to share an overview of the Commission on Rites and Sacraments and our work. This commission will explore the descriptions, theology, and practices of our rites and sacraments throughout the life of the church. Commission members will each lead a specific topic area, with responsibility for gathering input, coordinating information, and bringing insights and recommendations to the full commission. A supplemental document (English/Spanish/Portuguese) for your reference includes the commission charter, member bios, topics as written in our official documents, and what will be discussed within topic committees.

Commission Topics

The topics for discussion were drawn from those previously identified in our bylaws, with additions based on responses from the recent survey. At this time, the commission will address Baptism, Membership, Holy Communion, the Rite of Ordination, Rites of Passage, Holy Unions, Memorial Services, Rites of Blessing, Queer Theology, Christian Practices, and Regional Rites and Sacraments.

We recognize that this list is not exhaustive. Some topics may be further delineated to ensure adequate time for discussion and the development of actionable next steps. Topics for which commissions have been specifically convened will not have separate standing committees. However, individuals may share their perspectives directly with the commission via surveys, input sessions, etc.

Committee Overview and Participation

Commission members will regularly participate in discussions related to their chosen topic, sharing personal perspectives, regional experiences, and theological approaches. Membership includes pastors, lay leaders, those in care for ordination, and church members. This invitation for participation is an intentional step toward ensuring that voices from diverse backgrounds and stages of membership are actively engaged in this work.
