MCC Toronto in Canada was recently awarded the Key to the City, the highest civic honour bestowed by the City of Toronto. Mayor Olivia Chow presented the award to MCC Toronto, alongside several other faith communities, in recognition of their historic and ongoing activism in the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.

Rev. Deana Dudley, Senior Pastor and CEO of MCC Toronto, accepted the honour on behalf of the congregation. In her acceptance remarks, Rev. Dudley emphasized that the achievement belongs to the entire community, celebrating MCC Toronto’s rich history of love, justice, and its legacy as the birthplace of the world’s first legal same-sex marriages. She noted that while the recognition is a profound milestone, the global work for LGBTQ+ human rights remains unfinished, and MCC Toronto will continue to “use this key to open doors of love and justice.”

Celebrating 25 Years of Marriage Equality

The honour arrives as MCC Toronto celebrates the 25th anniversary of a pivotal moment in Canadian history. Under the leadership of Senior Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, courageous congregants—including Elaine and Anne Vautour, and Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell—along with legal counsel Douglas Elliott, participated in the historic 2001 weddings that ultimately led to the legal recognition of same-sex marriage across Canada.

As part of the ongoing anniversary celebrations, Rev. Dudley and congregant Elaine Vautour recently appeared on CBC Radio’s provincial open-line program, Ontario Today, to discuss the lasting impact of marriage legalization and invite listeners to share their own stories of how these historic unions changed their lives.
